I think another interpretational spin on this is viewing it from a fathers point of view during the end of his relationship with his children (maybe through death or when they turn away) He has a relisation of how he behaves, what he is done, how he cant change and wants his children to accept he isnt perfect and niether were they, and that they are just different people doing what they feel is right.
